Inthis article, Johnson and Rea used a descriptive study design toassess the effects of bullying in the health care workplaces. Thepurpose of the study was to describe the experiences of nurses withregard to bullying in the workplace. The researchers used a sample of249 subjects from the Washington State Emergency Nurses Associationto assess the workplace bullying. The researcher identified apositive correlation between bullying and ideation to either leavethe present job or the nursing profession. They also found that about27.3 % of the subjects had a bullying experience within the past sixmonths of the study. The researcher identified a positive correlationbetween bullying and intention to either leave the present job or thenursing profession. The authors concluded that the issue of bullyingin the workplace can be resolved by addressing its causes so thateffective remedies with the capacity to reduce its occurrence can beidentified. The article is an important resource that will advancethe researcher’s understanding of the causes and effect of bullyingin the field of nursing, thus making a valuable contribution in theproposed research.

Embreeand white conducted a concept analysis that focused on the issue oflateral violence among the nurses. The purpose of the study was toexamine the issue of lateral violence among the nurses. Theresearchers collected data from electronic databases and reviewed theliterature extensively in order to identify the points of agreementas well as the points of disagreement in different disciplines. Theauthors conducted the research in a five steps process starting fromconcept selection followed by the determination of common themes,objective of analysis, concept utilization, and the definition ofattributes. The authors found that lateral violence is positivelyassociated with negative patients’ outcome, increase in nurseturnover, low self esteem, and the creation of a damaging workenvironment. The researchers concluded that organizations caneliminate lateral violence by providing the nurses with techniquesand skills to reduce lateral violence and enhance their workenvironment. This article will provide useful information about thelateral violence among the nurses, consequences of lateral violence,and capacity to shape the work environment in a negative way. Inaddition, the article will enhance the researcher’s understandingof the effects of nurse-to-nurse violence in the nursing professionas a whole.

Longo,J. (2010). Combating disruptive behaviors: Strategies to promote ahealthy work environment. TheOnline Journal of Issues in Nursing,15 (1), 1-13.

Longoconducted a literature review of different causes and consequences ofdisruptive behavior in a health care workplace. The purpose of thestudy was to identify the suitable approaches of fighting destructivebehavior in the health care workplaces and promote a healthy workingplace for all workers. The author conducted the study by reviewingthe previous research works that addressed the issue of bullying in ahealth care set up. The author found that disruptive behavior in thehealth care workplace is mainly caused by differences in power andauthority among the workers. In addition, disruptive behavior atworkplace is associated with poor treatment outcome, medicationerrors, and reduced performance of disrupted health care workers. Theauthor concluded that Longo suggests that disruptive behavior can becountered at workplace through several strategies, including thedevelopment of policies, educating health care workers, andconfronting the issue of disruptive behavior among others. Thearticle will provide important information about the whole process ofdisruptive behavior, starting from its development and ending withhow it can be resolved, which is useful for the proposed research.

Theresearchers conducted a descriptive study of the impact of assertivecommunication in overcoming lateral violence. The purpose of thestudy was to identify approaches of reducing nurse-to-nurse lateralviolence in order to create a respectful and a healthy workplaceenvironment. The research was conducted by organizing 203 workshopsfor educating 4,000 nurses on methods of reducing lateral violence.The researchers collected data using electronically administeredquestionnaires. The researchers found that nurses who experiencedverbal abuse reduced from 90 % to 76 %, many nurses maintained arespectful workplace for their fellow workers, while others were feltthat they could resolve workplace conflict after the workshops. Theauthors of this article concluded that assertive communication is aneffective tool to enhance the working environment, reduce nurseturnover, and incidents of lateral violence. This article willenhance the researcher’s understanding of the use of assertivecommunication as one of the best ways to resolve the issue of lateralviolence among nurses. This will be a significant contributiontowards the development of the proposed research.
